FOX 24 US President Donald Trump has made clear from very early in his second term that he intends to reorder global trade by instilling permanent tariffs. More than a year later, his government has proven relentless in its attempt. Compounding the growing inflationary pressures from his ill-conceived war in Iran, Trump on Friday set a new round of tariffs ranging from 10% to 12.5% on products from more than 80 countries. But like other aspects of the administration’s signature policies — from bogus Justice Department investigations to unfounded claims of widespread national voter fraud — the stated reasons behind…
FOX 24 US In two cases this year, federal prosecutors announced that they had finally done it: charged the “antifa” cells and its members that had beguiled federal law enforcement in Minnesota. It was a hard feat to pull off, given the group’s notoriously chaotic, loosely defined organizational structure, and lingering questions about whether a group called antifa even exists in any coherent form. But in one case in Detroit, federal prosecutors brought charges against Kyle Wagner, who described himself in online diatribes as “Antifa Kyle.” For another case, brought in Minneapolis against 15 defendants, Wagner’s inclusion among the defendants…
FOX 24 US Former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson is on track to become the official Democratic Senate nominee as the Saturday convention will cap a surprisingly smooth process to replace Graham Platner. A fifth-generation logger, Jackson’s deep labor ties and union support helped him dominate the delegate nominating contests. His performance was so impressive that the other serious Maine Senate contenders — including former director of Maine’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention Nirav Shah, who placed ahead of Jackson in the gubernatorial primary they both ran in this cycle — dropped out of the race. A planned debate was…
FOX 24 US A panel of judges on Thursday unanimously rebuffed Black Tennesseans’ attempt to block the state’s new 9-0 Republican gerrymander. The panel was composed of one Obama appointee and two Trump appointees. Tennessee Republicans were the first to act after the Supreme Court decided Callais, the case that virtually killed the Voting Rights Act (VRA) and made racial vote dilution in redistricting impossible to prove. Legislators cracked the Memphis seat long held by Rep. Steve Cohen (D) into three parts, diluting the Black vote into heavily Republican areas. As the 6-3 right-wing Supreme Court supermajority intended, the coalition…
FOX 24 US This story was originally reported by Candice Norwood of The 19th. Meet Candice and read more of their reporting on gender, politics and policy. Masked law enforcement officers in tactical gear throwing civilians to the ground. In some cases — like Renee Good, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and Joan Sebastian Guerrero — officers shoot people dead. Others disappear into detention before being deported to countries where they may have no family or connections. Critics argue that the great country President Donald Trump envisions could be taken right out of a dystopian novel. A version of this society has…
FOX 24 US Weeks after the Iran War began, Rep. Joe Morelle (D-NY) predicted to TPM that it would become a billion-dollar-a-day “mess.” Now, with Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth taking to Capitol Hill to request almost $67 billion in supplemental war funding, Morelle says his fears have been confirmed. And though Morelle is a member of two key committees with oversight of the Pentagon, he claims Congress has been given little information about where all the money is going. “We had Hegseth in front of the Appropriations Defense Subcommittee and he couldn’t give us an accounting and wouldn’t give…
FOX 24 US Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) on Tuesday threatened to vote against President Donald Trump’s ambassador nominees for Jamaica and Slovakia unless the Trump administration released the money Congress appropriated for the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) — before he got “assurances” that convinced him to drop the plan. A member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Cornyn said he would single-handedly stop the nominations of Kari Lake and Doug Mastriano from being discharged from the committee, and therefore slowing down their confirmation, unless he received assurances on PEPFAR. “The only way it seems like you can…
FOX 24 US Almost five months into President Donald Trump’s war on Iran, the Trump administration still has not asked for authorization from Congress to continue hostilities. They, however, did present Congress with a supplemental request — which includes, among other things, an ask for $67.1 billion for the Department of Defense to fund Trump’s war. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth testified in front of the Senate Appropriations Committee Tuesday afternoon on the details of the Pentagon’s request. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) used a significant portion of her time asking Hegseth if the administration plans to use an Iran war supplemental…
FOX 24 US Pillow magnate and election denier Mike Lindell, who is also the Trump-endorsed Republican gubernatorial candidate in Minnesota, is reportedly not even registered to vote in Minnesota. Lindell, however, disputes this, telling TPM it’s simply “fake news.” As the Minnesota Star Tribune reported Friday, Lindell has an active voter registration in Texas. Lindell confirmed in a Tuesday interview with TPM that he has “places in both Texas and Minnesota” and that he moved to Texas in 2024 after he got married. He moved back to Minnesota in 2025, he said, to begin his gubernatorial run. The Minnesota Secretary…
FOX 24 US This article is part of TPM Cafe, TPM’s home for opinion and news analysis. It was originally published at Balls and Strikes. On July 7, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a homebuilder in Houston, woke up before sunrise, ate breakfast prepared by his wife, and drove his construction crew to work. Around 6:50 AM, federal immigration agents surrounded Salgado Araujo’s van and shot him through an open window. Struck in the stomach, he died at a hospital a few hours later. The Department of Homeland Security put out a statement that evening which claimed that immigration officers stopped Salgado Araujo’s van as part of a “targeted” operation,…
